If you have never read a Gary Paulsen book, now is the time to pick one up and enjoy many of his survival stories. Paulsen is a truly a master storyteller who has written more than 175 books, most of which are action adventure tales. It is widely agreed that he is one of the most important writers of young adult literature today and three of his novels — Hatchet, Dogsong, and The Winter Room — were Newbery Honor Books.

Your Life Work: The Librarian
An episode of US Government film series on careers. I think it was shown to high school students. It is interesting that this one was filmed at the Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) library in 1946. Naturally, there are many aspects of the job that have changed since the middle of the 20th century (but it still helps if you like people and books).

Digital Storytelling

I believe that the middle school students will really enjoy digital storytelling projects that will let them pursue personal interests and will utilize a lot of technological skills. It's a win/win situation.
